The Chol dynasty was founded by Vijayalaya Chola in 850 CE, who established his capital at Thanjavur. Under his rule, the Chol dynasty expanded its territories and established itself as a dominant power in southern India. The Chol’s were known for their Military prowess and Naval power, which allowed them to control trade routes and expand their influence over neighboring kingdoms.

During their reign, they made significant contributions in various fields, including:

Art and Temple Architecture:

Brihadeeswara Temple

The Chol Dynasty was known for its magnificent art and architecture. The Brihadeeswara Temple, built during the reign of Raja raja Chola I, is considered a “Masterpiece of Indian Architecture”. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features a towering vimana that is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. Six sub-shrines have been added to the Brihadeeswara temple complex in Thanjavur over time, and the entire complex was recognized as a World Heritage site in 1987. These temples were not only places of worship but also canters of culture and learning. The Cholas were also responsible for the spread of Shaivism, a major sect of Hinduism, throughout South Asia.
