The Chol dynasty was founded by Vijayalaya Chola in
850 CE, who established his capital at Thanjavur. Under his rule,
the Chol dynasty expanded its territories and established itself as a dominant
power in southern India. The Chol’s were known for their Military prowess and Naval
power, which allowed them to control trade routes and expand their influence
over neighboring kingdoms.
During their reign, they made significant contributions in various fields, including:
Art and Temple Architecture:
Brihadeeswara Temple
The Chol Dynasty was known for its magnificent art and
architecture. The Brihadeeswara Temple, built during the reign of Raja raja
Chola I, is considered a “Masterpiece of Indian Architecture”. The
temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features a towering vimana
that is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. Six sub-shrines have been added to the Brihadeeswara temple complex in Thanjavur over time, and the entire complex was recognized as a World Heritage site in 1987. These
temples were not only places of worship but also canters of culture and learning.
The Cholas were also responsible for the spread of Shaivism, a major sect of
Hinduism, throughout South Asia.

The Cholas were also known for their Bronze Sculptures [ also known as Wax Technique], which are considered some of the finest examples of Indian art.
Language:
The Chol Dynasty played an important role in the
development of the Tamil language. The Cholas were great patrons of Tamil
literature, and during their reign, the language flourished. The Cholas also
sponsored the creation of numerous works of literature, including the Epic
Manimekalai and compilation poem Silappatikaram, which tells the
story of a wealthy merchant and his love for a courtesan. Some of the
greatest Tamil poets and writers lived during this time, including Kamban, Sekkizhar,
and Nammalvar. The Chol dynasty's contribution to Tamil literature remains a
significant part of Indian cultural heritage.
Education:
The Cholas established several educational institutions, including the famous Gangaikonda Cholapuram University. They also supported the growth of Sanskrit and Tamil literature.
Agriculture:
The Cholas were pioneers in the field of irrigation
and agriculture. They built several dams, canals, and tanks to improve
agricultural production. The Kaveri delta benefited greatly from their
efforts.
Science and Technology:
The Cholas made several contributions to science and
technology. They developed advanced Metallurgy Techniques [metal work]
and Built Complex Irrigation systems. They also made significant
advances in medicine and astronomy.
